What the work involves.
Every job starts with a free inspection, and an inspection does not always turn into a job. Sometimes the roof has years left. Sometimes a small repair is all it needs. The point of the visit is to give you an accurate picture of the roof so you can decide what to do from there.
An inspection covers the whole roof system rather than only the shingles. Field shingles are checked for hail bruising, granule loss, cracking and wind damage. Flashing at walls, chimneys and valleys is checked for gaps and bad sealant. Pipe boots, vents and skylights are checked for cracks and leaks. Ridge caps, drip edge, gutters and downspouts are checked, and where there is attic access the decking and ventilation can be looked at from underneath.

We hold HAAG Certified Inspector credentials for residential and commercial roofs. That training is built around telling storm damage apart from normal wear, manufacturing defects and damage caused by foot traffic or installation, which is the question that decides whether an insurance claim makes sense.
There are three good times to have a roof inspected in North Texas. After any hail or significant wind event, before the filing window on your policy closes. When you are buying or selling a house, since a roof problem found after closing is yours. And when the roof passes about twelve years old, which is when most shingle roofs here start to show their age.
At the end of the inspection you get a plain explanation of what was found. If there is storm damage, we explain how the claim process would work. If the roof needs a repair, you get a written price. If the roof is fine, you hear that and the visit costs nothing.

My roof looks fine from the ground. Is an inspection worth it?
After a hailstorm, yes. Bruised shingles and cracked ridge caps are rarely visible from the yard, and the filing window on a claim does not wait for a leak.
Should I get an inspection before buying a house?
Yes. A general home inspector will look at the roof, but a roofing inspection looks harder at storm damage and remaining life, which can matter in a price negotiation.
