Storm Damage

What the work involves.

Collin County sits in one of the most active hail corridors in the country, and spring storms that roll east off the plains can put hail and straight-line wind across Prosper, Celina and McKinney in the same afternoon. The damage is often invisible from the ground. A roof can look fine from the driveway and still have dozens of bruised shingles per slope, cracked ridge caps and dented vents.

After a storm, the first job is a proper inspection. We hold HAAG Certified Inspector credentials for both residential and commercial roofs. HAAG trains inspectors to tell hail and wind damage apart from wear, blistering, manufacturing defects and foot traffic, which is exactly the distinction an insurance adjuster is making. Damage that is documented to that standard is easier to discuss with a carrier than a vague list of concerns.

The Difference

What to know before you decide.

An inspection after hail looks at the soft metals first: gutters, downspouts, vents and flashing show dents clearly and help confirm the storm hit the property. Then the shingles, slope by slope, for bruises where the mat has been fractured and granules knocked loose. Wind damage looks different, with creased or missing tabs and broken seal strips, usually concentrated on the slopes facing the storm. Everything found is photographed.

If there is storm damage worth filing on, we walk you through what the claim involves and meet the adjuster at the property when they come out, so the damage gets looked at together on the roof rather than argued about later. If the inspection finds no real storm damage, you hear that too, and there is no reason to open a claim.

Once the claim is approved, the work is either a targeted repair or a full replacement depending on what the carrier covers and what the roof needs. Gutters and siding that took damage in the same storm can often be included in the same claim, so it is worth checking the whole exterior, not only the shingles.

Timing matters. Many homeowners policies set a deadline for reporting storm damage, often one year from the date of the storm, and a leak left open through the next rain turns roof damage into interior damage. If water is coming in, call. A temporary cover can keep the house dry until the permanent work is scheduled.

Before You Call

Storm Damage, answered.

How do I know if my roof has hail damage?

Check the ground-level clues first: dented gutters, downspouts, AC fins and mailbox tops. If those took hits, the roof probably did too. The shingle damage itself usually needs someone on the roof to confirm, which is what the free inspection is for.

Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?

An inspection first is usually the better order. It tells you whether there is real storm damage before you open a claim. If there is, you can call your carrier with photographs in hand.

What does HAAG certified mean?

HAAG trains and certifies roof inspectors to identify hail and wind damage and tell it apart from wear and defects. Insurance adjusters are often trained to the same standard, so it helps both sides read the roof the same way.

Is there a deadline to file a hail claim?

Most policies set one, and one year from the storm is common in Texas. Read your policy or ask your agent, and do not wait for the next storm to find out.

Will you meet the adjuster?

Yes. We meet the adjuster at the property and go over the damage on the roof with them.
