Insurance Claims

What the work involves.

Insurance claims and construction can be confusing and overwhelming, and a roof claim combines both. Most homeowners file one every ten years if they are unlucky, and the process has its own vocabulary: deductibles, depreciation, the difference between actual cash value and replacement cost, supplements. We work directly with insurers, and we take you through it one step at a time.

The claim starts with the inspection. We document the storm damage with photographs and measurements so that when you call your carrier you know what you are reporting. You file the claim yourself, since it is your policy, and the carrier schedules an adjuster to inspect the roof.

The Difference

What to know before you decide.

When the adjuster comes out, we meet them at the property. Walking the roof together means the damage is identified in person, and any disagreement about what is storm damage and what is wear gets talked through while both people are standing on it. Our HAAG Certified Inspector credentials help here, because they train inspectors to read a roof the way most adjusters are trained to read it.

After the inspection the carrier issues a scope of loss and, usually, a first payment. Many Texas policies pay replacement cost in two parts: the actual cash value first, then the depreciation held back once the work is finished and invoiced. If the approved scope leaves out items the job requires, such as code-required drip edge, decking or extra layers, those can be sent back to the carrier as a supplement with documentation.

Your deductible is yours to pay. Texas law makes it illegal for a contractor to waive, absorb or rebate a homeowner insurance deductible, so be careful with any roofer who offers to. Texas also bars contractors from acting as public adjusters on a claim they are doing the work on. Our job is to document the damage, meet the adjuster and build the roof to the approved scope. The decisions on your claim stay between you and your carrier.

A denial is not always the last word. Carriers sometimes deny claims that deserve a second look, especially when the first inspection was quick or the damage was hard to see. A re-inspection request with better documentation can change the outcome. We will tell you honestly whether your roof looks like a case worth pursuing.

Before You Call

Insurance Claims, answered.

Does filing a hail claim raise my insurance rates?

A hail or wind claim is a weather claim, which carriers generally treat differently from a claim you caused. Texas also limits how insurers can act on weather claims. How your carrier prices it depends on your policy, so ask your agent. Our guide on this covers it in more detail.

Can you cover my deductible?

No, and no roofer in Texas legally can. State law prohibits contractors from waiving, paying or rebating a homeowner insurance deductible.

What if my claim was denied?

It is sometimes worth asking the carrier for a re-inspection with stronger documentation. We will look at the roof and tell you whether the damage supports that.

What is recoverable depreciation?

On a replacement cost policy the carrier often pays the actual cash value first and holds back depreciation. Once the roof is finished and invoiced, that held-back amount is released.

Do I have to use the roofer my insurance company recommends?

No. In Texas you choose your contractor.
