Hail Damage
What the work involves.
Hail is the reason most roofs in north Collin County get replaced. The damage it does is not always dramatic. A one-inch stone will not usually punch a hole in a shingle, but it will fracture the fiberglass mat underneath and knock off the granules that shield the asphalt from the sun. The shingle keeps the water out for now and starts to fail from that point, which is why hail damage often turns into leaks a year or two after the storm.
What hail damage looks like depends on the shingle. On an architectural shingle it shows up as dark, round spots where granules are missing, soft to the touch when the mat underneath has fractured. On older three-tab shingles, the hits can crack the tab outright. Ridge caps take hail hard because they are bent over the peak, and they are often the first place damage is obvious.

The Difference
What to know before you decide.
Everything else on the roof is evidence too. Dents in the ridge vent, turtle vents, pipe jacks and flashing confirm the size and direction of the hail. Gutters and downspouts show it from the ground. Adjusters use those same soft metals to decide whether a storm really reached a particular house.
A HAAG certified inspection looks at every slope and photographs what it finds. The count per slope matters, because carriers often decide between a repair and a full replacement based on how widespread the damage is. A slope-by-slope record gives that conversation something concrete to work from.
If the damage supports a claim, the work usually becomes a replacement paid by insurance less your deductible. When a hail roof is being replaced anyway, it is the right moment to consider a Class 4 impact-resistant shingle, which holds up better in the next storm and often earns a premium discount with Texas insurers.

Hail Damage, answered.
What size hail damages a roof?
Hail around one inch across and larger commonly damages asphalt shingles. Smaller hail can still damage older or already-worn roofs, and wind-driven hail does more damage than hail falling straight down.
Can hail damage be invisible?
Often. A bruise that fractures the shingle mat may not be visible from the ground, and some hail damage only turns into a leak a year or two later.
Are Class 4 shingles worth it in Collin County?
For many homes here, yes. They are rated to resist impact under the UL 2218 test, and many Texas insurers discount premiums for them. Ask your agent what the discount would be on your policy.
How soon after a hailstorm should I get an inspection?
As soon as you can. Many policies set a filing deadline, often one year from the storm, and documenting damage while it is fresh is easier.
