Should I repair or replace my roof after hail damage?
It depends on how widespread the damage is and how old the roof is. Scattered hits on one slope of a young roof can often be repaired. Damage across several slopes, a roof past about twelve years old, or shingles that can no longer be matched usually point to a full replacement, and that is often what an insurance claim ends up paying for.
Adjusters count the damage slope by slope
Most carriers look at hail damage one roof slope at a time. The adjuster marks out a test square, commonly ten feet by ten feet, and counts the hail hits inside it. If the count passes the carrier’s threshold, that slope is treated as damaged enough to replace.
A roof with several slopes past the threshold usually gets a full replacement, because patching most of a roof costs nearly as much and leaves a patchwork. A roof with one lightly damaged slope may get a repair.
Old shingles do not repair well
Asphalt shingles get brittle with age and heat. On a roof that has spent twelve or fifteen North Texas summers in the sun, lifting the neighboring shingles to weave in new ones cracks them, so a small repair turns into a larger one.
Matching is the other problem. Manufacturers retire colors and product lines, and the old shingles have faded. A repair on the back slope may not matter. A mismatched patch on the front of the house can matter to you and to your HOA.
Hidden damage shows up later
Hail that fractures a shingle mat does not always leak straight away. The bruised spot loses its granules, the asphalt underneath cooks in the sun, and a leak appears a year or two after the storm, often after the claim window has closed.
That delay is why it is worth getting a roof inspected after any significant hail, even when nothing is leaking yet.

Can I repair part of a roof and replace the rest later?
Yes, but it usually costs more overall and the two sections will not match. If insurance is paying for storm damage, the scope the carrier approves decides what gets done.
Does roof age affect a hail claim?
It can. Some Texas policies pay older roofs on an actual cash value basis, which subtracts depreciation for age. Check your policy for a roof schedule.
